We know that you lovely lot come to us for beautiful designs and one-of-a-kind cards. So, to help you celebrate those special occasions in style, we’ve launched Discovered by Paperchase. This handpicked collection of cards comes from a series of independent designers personally chosen by us. To show you why we love their work – and know you will too – we’ve had a little behind-the-scenes chat with each of the greeting-card creators. First up, we have the wonderful Type and Story!
My name is Niccy and I’m a graphic designer born and bred in London. Over the last 5 years I have embraced wellbeing in a big way, focusing on health, meaningful connections and authenticity as priorities in my life. The cards I make for Type and Story are an extension of these values.
An ethos of ‘good living’ is at the core of all my collections. Not only do I want the stories to appeal to customers stylistically, but I also want the designs to explore ideas for change. The Planet Earth collection, for example, reflects ideas around treasuring and celebrating the environment while also wishing a special someone a happy birthday.
I was at a crossroads in my career at the same time as having a slight identity crisis after the birth of my son. While finding my feet as a new mum, I chose to fill my spare time with a lot of daydreaming and designing. I’ve always loved stationery and stayed up to date with trends.
In 2016 I saw an advert for an event hosted by Not On The High Street, where makers could pitch their products to them. I pitched the first Type and Story collection, ‘Sign-Painting’, and three weeks later they became my first stockist!
The freedom to create whatever I like is so rewarding. As a graphic designer, ideas are always being challenged by clients who don’t necessarily have the best eye for design. This is of course part and parcel of the job, but it feels great to not have anyone going against what my instinct is telling me to keep with Type and Story.
Being lost in your own head thinking of concepts and ideas is every introvert’s dream! My favourite thing, however, is the flexibility of working for myself and the work-life balance that brings.
A card says so much about friendships and relationships, and choosing the right design makes the receiver feel loved and special. All just for a few pounds – who wouldn’t want to spend their money on making someone feel like that?
My cards are for people with an open mind, an open heart, and an appreciation for good-quality design.
Tracy Emin. I studied Art History and I’m a huge fan of hers. I would send her the Type and Story ‘Universe has your back’ card because I think she deserves to hear it!
