It was announced today, Friday 26th April 2019, that department store Debenhams is to close 22 of their stores in January 2020 and 50 stores in total following a restructure after it was taken over by its banks earlier this month.
Regrettably, Debenhams at The Heart Shopping Centre in Walton-on-Thames has been listed as one of three local stores to close in January. Other closures include Staines and Guildford.
Mark Middleton, Centre Manager at The Heart Shopping Centre commented: “Today’s news has brought sadness to the shopping centre as Debenhams has been a key store within the centre for many years. Although our store is one of Debenhams’ smaller branches offering women’s fashion, childrenswear and beauty, it has always traded extremely well and provided a strong array of products for our shoppers along with excellent customer service through their friendly team.
There has been uncertainty over the future of Debenhams for many months and now we know the store will be closing in January, our agent partners and landlords are already at work. The unit is well proportioned and has a profile location within the centre meaning that it would be a perfect opportunity to welcome a new anchor store or a new offer for the community of Walton-on-Thames. “
The Heart Shopping Centre has a good offer for local residents and those living in nearby towns and villages, offering over forty five retailers including Next, Paperchase, Clarks Shoes, Monsoon and River Island. The centre also benefits from a 24-hour gym, family friendly restaurants including Nando’s, Wagamama and Pizza Express and 800 parking spaces. In addition the centre hosts regular events including a monthly Farmers’ Market and Vegan Markets.
